Wallaman Falls is a natural wonder that needs to be experienced in person to be appreciated. Located in Girringun National Park, less than an hour’s drive from Ingham, it is Australia’s highest single-drop waterfall.
At its steepest point, the drop from Wallaman Falls is 268 metres. The crystal-clear water flows over several smaller cascades before plunging to a 20 metre-deep pool at the cliff’s base.
Wallaman Falls is part of the UNESCO World Heritage area and it is surrounded by ancient tropical rainforests which provide a home to many endangered species.
The mist-veiled views of Wallaman Falls and its lush rainforest gorge are truly magical. The area is completely undeveloped, and although an estimated 100,000 people visit annually, it remains one of the most pristine locations on earth. There are several ways to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this stunning place.
Take a Hike
The easiest way to view Wallaman Falls is by walking to the viewing platform just a short distance from the car park. From here you can witness the full majesty of the falls across the gorge.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a hike to the bottom of the gorge. This 4km return trip is quite strenuous, but the breathtaking view from below is well worth the effort. There are also many short walking tracks at Wallaman Falls which offer amazing views from different vantage points. To really immerse yourself in the beauty of this landscape, there are longer walks which take 2-3 days to complete.
If you just want to relax and soak up the serenity, you can camp out for a few days next to Stony Creek. You’ll find all the basic facilities here including cold water showers and gas barbeques. Don’t forget to obtain a permit first.
